The Canadian government is considering modifications to the Express Entry system that may affect the ranking of permanent residency candidates. These adjustments aim to eliminate extra points for LMIA-based job offers within the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Candidates holding an LMIA-based job offer gain an additional 50 to 200 CRS points, greatly enhancing their likelihood of obtaining an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Nonetheless, the government is worried that this system may grant unwarranted advantages to certain candidates and could lead to the improper use of the LMIA process.
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) prioritizes candidates according to their skills, education, language proficiency, and work experience. These key factors are stronger predictors of a candidate’s ability to impact the Canadian economy positively. By eliminating extra points for LMIA-based job offers, the government seeks to establish a fairer system.
The suggested modifications tackle issues related to individuals acquiring LMIAs or exploiting the system in ways that don’t align with their true qualifications. The government asserts that this action will safeguard the credibility of the Express Entry process.
Although LMIA-based job offers continue to be crucial for tackling labor shortages, attention will now be directed towards candidates who demonstrate strong qualifications and economic value. The suggested adjustments seek to guarantee that the system prioritizes merit and skill rather than external influences.
The proposed changes were not yet in effect as of December 18, 2024. Currently, candidates holding LMIA-based job offers can still earn extra CRS points. However, if the proposal goes into effect, these candidates will lose access to the additional points.
This adjustment could affect their ranking in the candidate pool and reduce their chances of receiving an ITA. The government has not announced an official timeline for these changes, but updates are expected as further decisions are made.
