Canada’s impending immigration policies are expected to create significant challenges for Indian nationals seeking to study, work, or settle there. Immigration Minister Marc Miller recently announced stringent measures to manage the flow of temporary and permanent residents, citing infrastructure, healthcare, and housing concerns.
Nearly five million temporary foreign worker permits will expire by the end of 2024. To remain in Canada, permit holders must either renew their visas or transition to permanent residency. Similarly, 766,000 study permits will expire by December 2024, though some students may qualify for postgraduate permits, which allow extended stays.
The Canadian government plans to reduce the number of permanent residents admitted annually. Next year’s target will drop from 500,000 to 395,000, a 21 percent decrease. Temporary foreign workers and international students will also see a reduction in their numbers by 2026, with cutbacks ranging from 10 percent to 40 percent.
These changes are part of the Trudeau administration’s broader strategy to address mounting pressures on Canada’s public systems. However, they could pose significant hurdles for Indian workers on temporary visas and those pursuing permanent residency.
Indian nationals, who make up a significant portion of Canada’s immigrant population, are known for their expertise in technical fields such as engineering, IT, and scientific research.
The policy adjustments come amid economic concerns. Former Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz recently stated that immigration has played a crucial role in sustaining the economy.
He described Canada’s current economic state as a recession, noting that new immigrants have bolstered consumption, offsetting a decline in consumer spending triggered by high inflation.
Canada’s ethnic Indian population, currently at 1.68 million, could face substantial challenges under the revised policies. As the government tightens its immigration framework, the impact on aspiring Indian workers and students remains uncertain.
