According to the latest data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Canada’s immigration numbers for 2024 are closely tracking the record-breaking levels seen in 2023. After a slight dip of 4.9 percent in June, immigration rebounded in July, with 47,770 new permanent residents arriving.
This marked a 6.9 percent increase from the previous month, bringing the total number of new permanent residents for the first seven months of 2024 to 303,640. This figure is nearly identical to the 304,125 who arrived during the same period in 2023.
If the current trend continues, Canada could welcome 520,536 new permanent residents by the end of 2024. This would represent a 10.3 percent increase over last year and exceed the 485,000-target set in the 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan.
Ontario remained the most popular destination for newcomers, attracting 41.6 percent of new permanent residents, or 126,185 people, between January and July. Economic immigration programs, including the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program and the Canadian Experience Class, accounted for 52.5 percent of the province’s new residents.
In Canada, Prince Edward Island saw the largest percentage increase in immigration in July, rising 35 percent. Newfoundland and Labrador followed with a 19.6 percent increase, and Nova Scotia saw a 13.9 percent rise. However, New Brunswick and Alberta experienced declines, with immigration falling 1.3 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively.
With immigration holding steady across the country, Canada is on pace to surpass its targets and potentially set another record for new permanent residents in 2024.
