Canada’s immigration numbers in 2024 match last year’s record-breaking levels, with 303,640 new permanent residents in the first seven months.
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), July saw a 6.9 percent spike in new permanent residents, bringing 47,770 individuals into the country. This recovery follows a slight dip in June, where numbers fell by 4.9 percent.
Based on current trends, Canada could exceed last year’s total of 471,815 new permanent residents. Projections suggest the country may welcome 520,536 permanent residents by the end of 2024, a 10.3 percent increase from the previous year and a 7.3 percent rise compared to the 485,000 target.
Ontario remains the top destination for newcomers, with 126,185 new permanent residents arriving in the province by July. Economic programs like the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) and others account for more than half of Ontario’s immigration.
Prince Edward Island saw the largest monthly immigration increase in July, rising by 35 percent, while other Atlantic provinces like Newfoundland, Labrador, and Nova Scotia also experienced notable gains. Conversely, immigration dipped slightly in New Brunswick by 1.3 percent.
Immigration surged in other parts of Canada, including British Columbia, where monthly arrivals jumped 16.5 percent, and Quebec, which saw a 9.4 percent increase. Alberta experienced a decline, with a 4.7 percent drop in July.
As 2024 progresses, Canada appears on track to set another record for new permanent residents, surpassing previous achievements in immigration growth.
