Canada’s immigration system is once again seeing a rise in its overall application backlog, even as processing times for study permits show noticeable improvement. According to the latest update from IRCC, while advancements have been made in clearing study permit applications ahead of the fall academic intake, the total number of applications across all categories awaiting processing has grown.
The increase is attributed to mounting volumes in other key immigration streams, such as family sponsorships, permanent residence applications, and temporary resident visas. IRCC continues to face significant operational challenges as it balances growing demand with resource limitations and evolving policy priorities.
Despite this rise, the department has made strides in streamlining student visa processing, aiming to support Canada’s position as a top global destination for international students. However, the broader backlog may continue to cause delays for many applicants seeking to come to or remain in Canada through other immigration pathways.
IRCC has reaffirmed its commitment to improving efficiency and reducing wait times across all categories, with digital transformation efforts and targeted hiring remaining central to its long-term strategy.
