The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) has introduced the Regional Economic Development through Immigration (REDI) pilot program. The initiative aims to address labor shortages in Ontario’s rural and northern regions by attracting skilled foreign workers to live and work in these areas.
The REDI program operates under the broader framework of the Provincial Nominee Program. It is a collaboration between the OINP and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
The program is part of ongoing efforts to meet labor needs and encourage settlement in smaller communities outside major metropolitan areas.
The pilot program launched on January 2, 2025, and will run until December 31, 2025. It targets four key communities in Ontario: Sarnia-Lambton, Thunder Bay, Lanark County, and Leeds and Grenville Counties.
The initiative aims to address workforce gaps and contribute to the economic success of these regions.
Eligibility for the REDI program is tied to three streams under the OINP Employer Job Offers category: the Foreign Worker Stream, the International Student Stream, and the In-Demand Skills Stream.
The Foreign Worker Stream focuses on skilled individuals with valid, full-time, permanent job offers in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupations. Jobs must meet or exceed Ontario’s median wage and be essential to the employer’s business.
The International Student Stream is open to foreign nationals who have graduated from a Canadian educational institution. Eligible candidates must hold a full-time, permanent job offer in a qualifying occupation.
The In-Demand Skills Stream targets workers with experience in high-demand occupations in Ontario. Applicants must have at least nine months of relevant work experience, a high school diploma, and CLB 4 or higher language proficiency.
Applications for the REDI program are processed through the OINP Expression of Interest system. Candidates will be considered during the regular selection process. The REDI pilot provides skilled workers with a new opportunity to achieve permanent residency while contributing to the economic growth of Ontario’s rural communities.
