Manitoba has introduced a new process to help temporary foreign workers (TFWs) extend their work permits while waiting for permanent residency decisions under the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP).
The province began accepting applications on September 18, allowing TFWs to apply online for letters of support that will enable them to continue working while their permanent residency applications are processed.
This initiative follows Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) ‘s announcement that it will target qualified temporary workers with pending permanent residency applications. The process supports skilled labor in Manitoba and addresses ongoing labor shortages.
Labor and Immigration Minister Malaya Marcelino highlighted that this program allows TFWs who meet certain criteria, including continuous residency, valid work permits, and current employment with a Manitoba-based employer, to remain in the province while awaiting their permanent residency decisions.
In August, Manitoba signed a letter of intent with the federal government to allow up to 6,700 temporary foreign workers, identified under the MPNP, to extend their work permits.
This agreement ensures eligible TFWs can continue their employment while their permanent residency applications are processed.
The Manitoba government’s collaboration with Ottawa is expected to significantly benefit the province’s labor market, which relies on foreign workers to fill high-demand skilled positions. The ability to apply online for these letters of support is intended to streamline the process and assist TFWs who wish to remain in Manitoba long-term.
