Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has implemented changes to immigration application fees, with adjustments taking effect on December 1, 2024. While some fees increased, others remained unchanged, including those for permanent residence and study permits.
The revised fees affect applications for temporary residents, such as tourists, international students, and temporary foreign workers. Those applying for reinstatement of temporary status, criminal rehabilitation, or authorization to return to Canada are also impacted.
Fee increases include applications for temporary resident permits, restoration of status as a visitor or worker, and inadmissibility on criminality grounds. For example, the fee to restore visitor status increased from $229 to $239.75, while authorization to return to Canada rose to $479.75.
Applicants are advised to review the new fee schedule carefully. Submitting the incorrect fee can result in delays or application refusals. Those who applied online must verify that they paid the updated fees before submitting their applications.
Mail-in applicants should note that if an application was sent before the change, it will generally be processed without rejection if the old fee was paid.
If a fee difference arises, applicants are required to pay the adjustment amount. Payments must be made online, and receipts should be submitted according to IRCC instructions.
Despite some fee increases, several major categories remain unaffected. Fees for permanent residence applications under programs like the Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Programs stay the same. Family sponsorship fees for spouses, partners, children, and parents are also unchanged.
Study permit and temporary resident visa fees remain stable, benefiting international students and temporary visitors. Work permit fees under employer-specific or open streams have not been adjusted. Refugee and humanitarian applications also retain their existing fee structures.
The government appears to have maintained stability in key categories to balance affordability with accessibility. The decision reflects efforts to keep Canada attractive to immigrants while supporting vulnerable groups. Applicants should stay informed about fee changes to avoid complications and ensure smooth processing.
