The Canadian government has announced initiatives to streamline the process of obtaining a Social Insurance Number (SIN) for newcomers, aiming to enhance efficiency and reduce wait times.
Introduction of SIN@Entry
Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), in collaboration with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), plans to launch SIN@Entry during the 2025-2026 period. This program is described as an “integrated and automated bundle of immigration services and SIN services.” It will allow applicants for immigration streams, such as work permits or permanent residence, to request a SIN and access their SIN Confirmation Letter directly through their IRCC secure account. This integration eliminates the need for a separate SIN application process.
Expected Benefits
- Reduced In-Person Visits: The initiative could decrease in-person visits to Service Canada locations by up to 50%, alleviating congestion and minimizing wait times for other in-person services.
- Immediate Access: Newcomers will have immediate access to their SIN upon arrival, facilitating quicker integration into the workforce and access to government services.
Distinction from SIN@Landing
It’s important to differentiate SIN@Entry from the existing SIN@Landing program. SIN@Landing allows temporary and permanent residents to apply for their SIN upon arrival at select Canadian airports with on-site Service Canada centers. These centers are located at:
- Toronto Pearson International Airport
- Montréal Trudeau International Airport
- Vancouver International Airport
- Halifax Stanfield International Airport
- Calgary International Airport
- Edmonton International Airport
However, these airport Service Canada centers have limited operating hours, and newcomers are advised to check timings in advance. If the centers are closed upon arrival, individuals can apply for their SIN online or at other Service Canada locations.
Enhancements to eSIN Automation
In addition to SIN@Entry, ESDC and Service Canada plan to enhance the eSIN online application system. Starting in September 2025, the improved eSIN system will process eligible online SIN applications using advanced technology, reducing processing times from the current five business days to mere minutes. Furthermore, beginning in May 2025, digital copies of the SIN confirmation letter will be available as PDFs through My Service Canada Account (MSCA), providing applicants with secure and immediate access to their SIN documentation.
Current Methods to Obtain a SIN
Presently, newcomers can apply for a SIN through three avenues:
- In Person: At a Service Canada location, where the SIN is issued on the same day.
- Online via eSIN: Processing takes approximately five business days.
- By Mail: Applications are processed within 20 business days from the date of receipt.
These forthcoming initiatives reflect Canada’s commitment to improving services for newcomers, facilitating their seamless integration into Canadian society and the workforce.
